Mitch Marsh could be capable of batting as high as No.4 in all formats for Australia in the future, according to long-time mentor Justin Langer.

Langer, in his role as Western Australia coach, has been helping Marsh convert potential into performance for most of his career.

Marsh developed as a bowler following his call-up during the 2015 Ashes but the same can't be said of his batting.

In both Tests and ODIs, the allrounder passed 50 once in the six months that followed his Lord's recall.

But the 24-year-old has since delivered three outstanding one-day knocks for Australia, including a pressure-laden 79no earlier this week in Barbados.

Langer, coaching Australia in the ongoing ODI tri-series in the absence of Darren Lehmann, beamed as he called it a big innings in Marsh's development.

Marsh now averages 39.68 with the bat in ODIs, with Langer predicting an incredibly bright future.

"He can easily become a four or five in all formats of the game," Langer said.

"That's what he'll be aspiring to do and he's certainly got the ability to do that. With maturity I think he could easily do that in all formats.

"He's that talented and with a bit of confidence and a bit more experience."

Langer added he was confident a big Test score was just around the corner for Marsh, opining that his ODI knock in a virtual semi-final could be a turning point.

"There's been a lot of great players who have had that one big innings and it's changed their career," he said.

"You've got to earn the right to have the confidence and earn the right to get those opportunities.

"Every time you have a great innings for Australia, that just gets you closer to feeling like you're really a part of it and you really belong.

"For him to be there at the end was a great achievement for him and a huge confidence booster."
