Victorian coach David Saker has been appointed to the role of full-time assistant coach of the Australian cricket team.

Saker, previously England's fast-bowling coach, will fill the vacancy left by Craig McDermott ahead of Australia's tour of South Africa in late September.

He guided the Bushrangers to their 30th Sheffield Shield title in his only season in charge.
