It is natural that we all strive for greatness and each of us wants to go forward and forward only. Every New Year we see at least one new crazy trend pop up. It doesn’t matter whether it has something to do with health or beauty, cars or fitness, we all want to improve and better our lives in various ways. This same pattern applies to fitness and since we’ve now entered 2018, it would be useful to see what fitness trends are in store for us this year. Let’s jump in.

High intensity workouts

At the moment, the future is bright for high intensity, CrossFit-style workouts. And it is no surprise really, considering how popular CrossFit has become. However, more and more people are starting to feel the consequences of these high intensity regimes. There is no doubt that high intensity workouts are an effective way to train and trim your body, but people are slowly starting to realize that even this regime has its shortcomings. These short, fast workouts have holes that cannot be filled. Throwing yourself against the wall as hard as you can isn’t always a prerequisite to achieving what you want and on top of that, it starts to hurt after a while. Therefore, we really have to question whether this craze will be even more popular or whether it will start to fade. Many fitness professionals suggest the latter.

Diet changes

This year most likely won’t revolutionize much when it comes to the way people eat. Staying hydrated and eating heart-healthy foods such as fruits and vegetables and fiber-rich fish a couple times a week needs to be the top priority for every gym-goer. In addition to that, we should eliminate junk food full of trans-fats and salt. Of course, everything we’ve mentioned so far is basically common knowledge. However, according to Gretchen Rubin, the author of The Happiness Project, the anti-sugar movement will make a considerable impact on the way we eat. Rubin predicts that in 2018, people will become increasingly aware of the negative health effects of sugar and therefore make fundamental changes to their eating habits.

Inner and outer fitness

Another hot shot in the world of fitness, Michael Stanwyck, sees 2018 as the year when inner health starts to rival outer strength. Stanwyck, who is a former coach and general manager at CrossFit Los Angeles, predicts that the health and fitness world will continue to move to incorporate people’s inner experience with their outer results. Stanwyck claims that physical improvement needs to be accompanied by the support of an individual’s inner development. Therefore, things such as mindfulness, gratitude and joy will be critical for people’s health and well-being. Or at least that’s how it will be seen. Is modern fitness in Australia ready for an allegiance with inner fitness? We can only wait and see.      

Recovery 2.0

We’ve already mentioned how CrossFit and other HIIT-like workouts have encouraged people to kick up the intensity in the previous year. However, 2018 is going to be all about slowing down. Numerous fitness professionals think that instead of draining ourselves with high intensity workouts seven days a week, we will start incorporating better recovery techniques and the emphasis will be shifted a bit. High intensity workouts are a significant part of the equation for better performance. However, the other part has to be recovery. And the recovery we’re talking about here isn’t the 30-second water break between circuits or supersets. Emphasis will be shifted to breaks from exercise, active rest, myofascial release and sleep.

Are these trends going to sky-rocket in 2018? No one can say for sure. However, it is good that you know what to expect. It is inevitable that the world of fitness is changing and therefore it is important that we all anticipate the change.
